Résumé
Robert Crahmer (*1986, Lutherstadt Wittenberg) is a photographer and ultra-contemporary multimedia artist based in Berlin. He has been working under the pseudonym Rob ≠ Chamber since 2016. Originally chosen as a mask against social prejudices, and a detachment of family affiliation, this artist name now stands as a questioning of conventional role models of identity and attempts to reflect on the tension between self-knowledge, self-protection and self-renunciation.
R. has been collaborating in the emerging Berlin independent culture, while developing an eclectic photographic style range. From conventionally clean or exaggeratedly artificial studio images to serious documentary style authenticity, from shrill neon color palettes with raw punk appeal of impaired b/w laser copies, from early 2016 monochrome closeup scans with turpentine/oil-paint experiments on transparent plastic sheets, to intentionally or involuntarily falsely handled cameras and/or films. What others would deny or discard, Crahmer values for its' unpleasantness, for its' deviation, loss of information and damage.
Thematically, Crahmer claims, the work deals with internal issues relating to questions of identity, repression, belonging and the Eros principle. His work oscillates between staged theatricality and ironic abstraction, between überstylization and intented deconstruction. His visual language, which wants to be understood as an attempt to revolt against conventional viewing habits, has earned him worldwide niche recognition and mutual support of collaborating and befriended designers/brands, teams, performers, models and many other artists or personalities.
